There are many species of Oak Tree growing across the globe, each species has particular characteristics, whether it is a white or red Oak, as well as the place and position the tree came from. A majority of Oak currently sold on the market is sourced from Russia. Normally it would be called Russian Oak due to its Origin, but it is marketed as English Oak as it shares the same Botanical name. In comparison the Russian Oak does not appear similar to English Oak due the soil and climate differences. The Russian Oak is darker with tighter growth rings from shorter summer growth. Russian Oak has a poor reputation in Europe due to rampant illegal foresting of Oak and other timber. There are also very little standards covering drying and grading. This is why it is generally accepted there are no PEFC certificates with the timber, and if there are they are generally forged. France offers the perfect climate and fertile soil for Oak. Good summer growth and mild winters allow it to produce a stable timber rich with character. French Oak is preferred by the worlds best Vineyards and furniture makers. Oak has other used as well. It has been used since the Middle Ages for tanning leather in pits. Another use was to make India Ink by boiling it with Iron. Quercus Pedunculata ; Quercus Sessiliflora France is, furthermore, the first European producer of Oak with ANNUAL SAWN TIMBER PRODUCTION of 950 000 m3 |
Oak covers 5.530.000 ha within the French forest: it is the most widespread specie. The French Oak tree is what most people recognize as a wide trunk with a broad canopy. The soil and climate make ideal conditions Oaks are tall(40 meters) with a large diameter ( up to 1 meter), with straight trunk and slow growth. They are harvested from 200 years old for our use. They tree has matured making the finished product more stable for our use. The trees are tagged and sold individually by Government Auction. They are available for inspection prior and available for felling. Felling is done in a way that it does not disturb or damage other parts of the Forrest. The trees are removed immediately after felling as not to stain the timber or allow pests damage. After the removal 4 more trees of the same species must be planted in its place of the old tree. Later the trees are removed as they grow to allow one tree to take place of the felled tree. The system in place makes sure that the Industry remains stable and that future availability is considered. In fact Frances Oak population has tripled since the early 1900's due to this policy. |
